The Veterans Consortium Honors Shook Again for Pro Bono Service

For the second time in two years, The Veterans Consortium (TVC) has chosen to honor Shook for its commitment to helping those who serve our country. TVC will recognize Shook with its 2024 Community Impact award at an event in Washington, D.C. on November 13, 2024.

Shook Partner and Pro Bono Director Scot Fishman – as part of an effort to re-envision the firm’s pro bono program – launched a veteran’s advocacy team three years ago. Now, over 150 of the firm’s lawyers and numerous professional staff have supported our veterans, taking on over 90 military discharge upgrade and disability compensation appeals.  In fact, this great work is part of the reason why Shook’s pro bono program experienced, in just one year, a 34% increase in average hours per lawyer and a 65% increase in participation. 

“Shook, Hardy & Bacon demonstrates excellence and dedication in service to the unique and emerging legal situations of veterans in need by providing pro bono representation and support in all of The Veterans Consortium service offerings,” wrote TVC. 

In 2022, TVC named Shook the Law Firm Pro Bono Mission Partner for standout pro bono work for veterans, and just two years later, has decided to honor the firm again. Earlier this year, Shook also received the Beacon of Justice Award from the National Legal Aid and Defender Association’s (NLADA) for the firm’s commitment to protecting civil rights.

TVC was established in 1992 and is a leading national nonprofit dedicated to providing free legal services to veterans whose benefits were unfairly denied. The program trains and mentors hundreds of attorneys, law students, law firms and corporate in-house counsel committed to providing free representation to veterans in need.
