Reid has a diverse intellectual property law practice with a focus on both trademark and patent counseling and prosecution. He is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Reid has drafted both provisional and non-provisional utility applications and filed responses to office actions in order to obtain registrations in practice areas such as technology and telecommunications, digital health, AI, machine learning, and 3D printing. Reid has extensive experience with U.S. patent-eligible subject matter issues under 35 U.S.C. § 101 and interpretive case law. He not only assists in the filing and prosecution of patent applications, but also provides counseling in the form of patentability opinions, patent searching and international filings.
Reid also manages the trademark portfolios of 58 trademark clients. The largest of these portfolios contains more than 1,000 distinct trademarks. Reid has handled the prosecution of more than 700 domestic trademarks and has managed the prosecution and maintenance of over 1,400 foreign trademark matters across multiple countries including the United Kingdom, China, Argentina, Australia, Brazil and Canada, as well as the European Union.
Reid has assisted in launching and protecting brands in many fields such as agriculture, automotive, appliance and furniture, and computer technologies. He conducts trademark availability searches and prepares trademark availability opinions for clients looking to launch brands or enter new markets. His experience includes negotiating co-existence and settlement agreements, as well as filing and defending trademark oppositions in front of the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). Reid has a background in computer science, business management and marketing, all of which give him a broad range of knowledge in handling complex client needs. Reid is also active in pro bono representation and trademark prosecution for clients who do not have the resources to hire an attorney.
Reid began developing his skills in intellectual property in law school, where he was the executive articles editor for the Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal. Also while in law school, Reid interned for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Texas, researching and drafting memoranda and pleadings in civil and criminal proceedings. He also worked at the Office of the Texas Attorney General, researching and drafting memoranda relating to consumer protection, and interned at a private practice litigation firm. For fun, Reid served on the executive board of the Assault and Flattery Law School Theater Group, and was the stage manager of this satirical play presented each year by law students.
