Hansen: Colorado’s Artificial Intelligence Act to Impact Health Care Community
Colorado's artificial intelligence (AI) law, known as the Colorado AI Act, requires careful attention before it takes effect in 2026, particularly within the health care community, according to an article in the American Health Law Association’s Health Law Connections authored by Shook Associate Josh Hansen. In “Colorado's Artificial Intelligence Law: What Providers Need to Know,” Hansen reviews key definitions in the law, obligations it creates and its exceptions. Hansen says the law at its core is a transparency and accountability law: companies must inform state residents about limited AI uses and establish AI governance measures to prevent discrimination against Colorado residents.
Hansen notes that the law will have a tangible impact on those in the health care community and says the community must take steps now to assess whether it applies to their operations and what may be required of them for compliance. "Even if the law doesn’t apply to specific health care providers now, AI is growing at such a rapid rate that a provider’s situation could be different by the time the law goes into effect," he says.
